Hello Artists, Writers, Poets, & Story makers,

It’s hard to believe the year is almost over; I’m not sure where the time goes. Tempus fugit, as my father likes to remind me. Anyhow, life and work go on, and change is always happening. So it is here at Story maker.

A little while ago, I had considered closing the publication. But after several of you offered to help, and a couple of subsequent changes in personnel, Anna Rozwadowska has joined as co-editor, and we’re relaunching.

I think we are set to grow Story maker as the place to go for great poetry & prose and a community for writers, poets and artists that I had first imagined it to be.

We’re launching a competition too! Find out about the Anthology Competition below

So Going Forward…

Anna and I will be managing the publication together and sharing responsibilities. Anna will be the one responsible for editing, providing feedback and scheduling your submissions. She is a full-time writer and freelance editor with a specific focus on literary standards. I will publish the weekly Story maker Letters, which will feature some of the best submissions material from the previous seven days.

Social Sharing

We automatically tee up every post in our social media scheduler. It’s called SocailBee if you’d like to check it out for yourself. It’s a 360 degree RSS feed, so every new article or poem you publish goes into the endless looping feed. In other words, we’re sharing your stuff around the clock 365 days per year. We’re on Twitter, follow us there!

A Quick Word From Anna

Dear Story makers, salute!

I am super proud of embarking on this joint venture with Larry, who has been keeping Story maker alive. We are planning on re-resurrecting the publication and providing a home that no one offers on Medium. What this means for the writer, is that it will be a place where you want to publish your poems, a warm and inviting home, but also for seasoned writers, as we intend to build our audience. Having said that, we so much look forward to housing your talent at Story maker, we will be expeditious with response time, and promise to give each writer a fair chance to come home and look at their work, with pride and joy.

-Anna Rozwadowska, co-editor of Story maker.

What Story maker is about

Story maker celebrates art and creativity in written form. Poetry, short stories, creative non-fiction, and essays are welcome. Write about life, death, love, hate and everything in between. Express what you feel in a few short lines or a few thousand words. We wish to showcase your interpretation of the world and the people in it. What is your story, and what are the challenges you face with your daily work? We want that too. In other words; offer your experience and advice to the community through your stories.

If you are a designer, portrait artist, sculptor, writer or author, poet, singer-songwriter, musician, illustrator, crafts person, photographer, furniture maker, or whatever, we want to hear from you and publish your work.

Write and share photos, audio and video of your work. Explain your creative process, share your struggles and challenges. Tell us how you started and where you’re going.

What We’re Looking For

We are seeking content that speaks of the creative spirit, interpretation of the world in which you live, and reflects your passion for your work. We are not hard on spelling and grammar because we expect that sometimes your work contains specific nuances that do not take into account what we would typically call “good English”.

That said, we do notice when a piece is poorly written or not enough attention has been afforded to the basics. So please give your piece your best effort. Use Grammarly before submitting.

The following types of content are welcome;

  • Poetry
  • Short Stories
  • Essays
  • Articles describing your creative process and experience as an artist/writer
  • Culturally relevant articles on Art & Creativity

What We’re NOT looking for;

  • Self-help
  • Chick-lit
  • Life hacking
  • Political discourse
  • Pornographic writing

Please Use Tags

Tags are essential; they help readers find your work. So, if you’re submitting poetry, use the tag Poetry. Submitting a short story? Use the Short Story tag. Writing on creativity? Use the tag, Creativity. And of course, try always to add the tag, Art to your submission.

The Anthology Competition

So Anna and I were thinking hard about how we can create value for our community of writers, and we decided to create an anthology of the best content on Story maker. Poetry and fiction prose is what we are after, and the best of it will go to print in 2020.

The Theme

The theme we have set is “city life”, and the anthology will be titled; Stories From People From The City. Your poetry or prose should tell a tale of city life, the love, hate, life and death of people. Write about their challenges to survive and to grow, their endeavors to find themselves within the noise and mania that they endure in the urban sprawl. Live in the city? Write about it. Live in the countryside? Write about its contrast with the concrete jungle. Put your blood and sweat on to the page — give your story the emotionality of your experience.

Printing, Publishing & Getting Paid

The book will be available on Amazon in ebook and print form and writers of stories that make the cut will share the profit. Full disclosure on costs and income will be published here in Story maker Letters. The finer details we will need to work out and will let you know those as we progress, but this is likely to be a 4 to 6 month project.

How to Contribute

Just publish your best work on Story maker and include the tag; Anthology2020. The only stipulation right now is that it is new and original content. Please don’t take old content you have published on another Medium publication and submit it to Story maker for this competition because it will no be chosen. Besides, we’d like you to create something new.

We’ll publish more details soon.

Got questions? Brilliant! Ask them in the comments.

Our New Identity

We’re looking at a few options for a slight re-brand and would love your input. Here’s the logo we’re playing with…what you reckon?
